I am
going to make an analysis of the title sequence of the film ‘Zombie land’. In
the opening scene of the sequence we are presented with a man falling from a
building, in slow motion, with a man behind him as if he had pushed him. This
opening scene creates its first enigma; this gives the impression to the
audience the film has something to do with this man being falling. We are
introduced with ‘rocky’ violent music. The music seems to be from a rock genre;
which gives the impression that the film is horror or action. Because the music
had opened up with this particular genre of music, it seemed as if it needed to
involve violence or violent scenes; which is stereotypically connected with
horror or action films.
A mid
shot of a man covered in blood was the next scene. Maintaining the horrific
look, we see blood is vomiting from his mouth, this displays to the audience
that it involves some gore and violence, which is usually associated in horror
films. The title sequence continues to show fear by setting up a long shot of
two women, one whom is dressed in typical feminine colours, pink and white,
showing the connotations of a woman and representing her as innocent or the
‘angel’, this is then supported to show her innocence as she is being chased by
another woman whom seems to anger this ‘innocent’ girl. She is dressed in
darker clothing and covered in blood, which creates buzzwords such as ‘evil’.
Following the last scene a scarce man wearing a cardboard sign reading ‘the end is near’ and ‘zombies’ seemed to be running towards him. The sign implies that in fact ‘the end is near’ which mean something is going to change the world for the humans. This is reinforced by the fright shown on his ace because he realizes he is going to be attacked. A wide shot where a car is on fire, and dark smoke coming from it shows the dreadful incident that has occurred. The dark colours correspondingly
suggesting violence, as dull colours such as black and red are usually stereotypically
associated with this. We see the title of the name appear on screen
with a glass affect with a guy with a weapon about to smash it. In the background we notice the ‘zombie’ covered in blood running towards him, so he smashes the
glass effect of the writing to pieces using his weapon. This shows fear in the
film. The blood on the ‘zombie’ shows an indication that it is easy to discover
that genre
of the film is horror. The next shot, we see a woman running
without a top, showing her to be naked. This may show create enigmas for
the audience in to whether the film is associated with nudity and sex or
whether it is associated with violence. When linking the features ‘violence,
nudity, blood and rock music’, it would typically be witnessed as using typical
brutal connotations of a horror film.
At the end of
the sequence, it shows a blood splatter on the screen, shadowed by a man
falling from which seemed to be the building behind him, through something which
then leads into a screen of darkness. The darkness could associate that there
is no hope for the people that remain human.
The typography
throughout the title sequence is written in capitals and in a typical horror
colour, red. Red typography is usually used to link with danger. Using the
colour red strengthens the genre of horror as horror is suppose to involved
some gore and blood. Throughout the title sequence the characters are always
seeming to run away a ‘zombie’ or turning into a ‘zombie’. We know just by the
title sequence the film is going to adhere to the story line for the film and
its title.
